Texturally Speaking......

As promised, I got some adequate photos of the piece I am currently working on. Okay, this probably does not knock you over with tons of appeal....give it time! Surprisingly, the texture shows fairly well, though naturally if you had the canvas in your hand, it would show a lot more variation in color.
This was a canvas I poured the gesso on then took a palette knife and pushed it about. There were already a couple of layers on there, so there was a good base for it to stick to and begin to dry and form.
I wanted a look of a stuccoed wall, and the color something in the range of old parchment or papyrus. The yellow came up nicely, then I added some soft black, some brown (umber I think) and then took one of the Golden fluids, an interference red, and rubber stamped the piece. The beauty of the interference color is straight on it shows little, buuuuuuuuuut.....
......tilt the piece to the side and there is this abundance of shimmer. It's like you have turned on the lights on a Christmas tree! There is something about the quality of the paint that allows it to be gaudy and subtle at the same time, and I love using these! It is NOT copper, though in the pic it appears that way. The base color of the canvas still shines through; all the shading, the lights and darks, the bumps, lines and crevices. It almost floats on top of the other texture visually.
This is just the beginning; as I get more done on this, I will post it. This is going to be a complex piece, so there may be *jumps* in the photo progress, because I tend to get working and don't want to quit for fear of losing the train of thought.
There is also the issue of Anne heading to the cellar and the camera being upstairs, and not wanting to walk the stairs again..... ;) At least this time it's not laziness!
Yes, I am one of those people who gets excited over lumpy, bumpy, dirty looking canvas.
Yes, I really do have a life!
And this is part of it!
So what odd technique do you use that other people look at you like you've lost your mind when you express great happiness over? Come on---fess up!
And have a good creative, totally satisfying art day!

good morning early bird! jeez i am not a morning person, but here i am! this is so fun! but y'know, fun in an intelligent way! there is nothing like building up texture for sheer joy! and you are a master at it! you already know about my squashed eggshell paper i'm building up but my next juicy textural adventure is this: my trash guys tend to be a bit messy and there is always some detritus left at the scene. i tend to be a bit lazy and tend to ignore it unless it's bad enough to make the neighbors cry. about two months ago i had thrown out, yeah i actually did throw somethin out, some rather butt ugly fake flowers that had been part of some trashy treasure. yesterday i looked down and what caught my eye was soooooo cool: smashed pancake flat and fubar was this THING, which upon closer inspection proved to be one of those flowers but totally morphed into a piece of decrepit beauty. there originally must have been some pod like forms which are now these roadkill flat, cottony shapes. i don't know how to say it accurately, it's like they have drawn themselves and is oh so cool. soooooo, pick out some gravel and get out the paints and have at it! right after i complete an annoying two hour computer training at the college which enables me to get some hours working at registration. damn! that pesky survival thing! oh girl, i wish i could take pics like you! so fine! happy art day!

I can see exactly what you have described with the cottony thing--it ought to be cool to use!
I have PT today, so it will be afternoon before I can return to the studio and worl on this. I so wanted to work on it last evening but knew if I started I would be down there half the night. SO! It's up and at 'em for Kokomo. I hope I can make it home by 1:00 p.m.
In the mean time, after I get ready, I may slip down there a second but probably won't have time.
Gary did the registration thing too; it's not bad! Just remember there is art afterwards!!!! :)

Love the shades of colors! I wouldn't have thought you could get so many cool layers from just some paint on canvas - shows what I don't know about collage! This would make an amazing piece of fabric - have you looked at Spoonflower.com? You can send a jpg of art and they will print fabric on demand....Also, have you checked out ArtGlitter Institute? They have some pretty amazing glitters (exceptionally fine), as well as some crushed glass - lots of cool things that could marinate... Work hard at PT and then reward yourself!

I just came from reading a post on Terry Jarrard's blog about process, and here you are, with a wonderful process piece. I love it, and love working with canvas and gesso that way. Succes complet, mon vieux!

Can't wait to see what it becomes.

Thanks all for the comments; it is so rewarding for me to just *start* and see where the canvas and paint takes me. I can honestly say this is NOT quite the color I had in mind, but turned out to be the absolutely perfect color for the piece.
So.
Sometimes you have to let the materials guide you.
I can't wait ti get pix of the corners, where I have added pumice gel, dark paint, and then some metallic gold over the top, just as a tiny hightlight! I think I will try to shoot that this afternoon and see if the detail comes up okay.
PT is going good; have more range of movement---whooo-hooooo! Look out world!
Linda, I've not check out the Art glitter institue yet---I plan to! I'm just trying to recover fro having to buy flat shoes and workout clothes because, damnit, if I have to GO to get exercised, I'm going to be fashionable in my own unique way! LOL!
Off to the studio to do some more!
Hugs to all!
