More Excitement Than I Needed.....or, The Weekend

(this is waaaay too close to where Hubby works.....)
Sorry to start this off with a crappy photo, but this is an aerial pic I snagged from a local newscast. The red dot is where Gary works (if you enlarge it, you may be able to see). The diagonal is our runway at the Base and the white line crossing it is the path of the tornado that occurred at 1:48 a.m. Sunday morning.
It left a swath of damage for the short time it was on the ground, destroying woods I used to mushroom hunt in as a kid, a farm home that has been there for as long as I have lived in Indiana, there is no sign of a barn that used to stand, a hog containment unit (ripped the roof off) and took out numerous powers lines and did more structural damage as it went on it's rampage.
I did not go out to shoot photos; I refuse to be wandering around when linesmen need to work, neighbors are trying to help others get trees out of the road and figure if it is not my neighborhood, then I'm giving them some privacy. If you live close, know the folks, that's different. (this happened in my friend Vicki's neighborhood--as we say for large sections of country land!--and she did some photo-documentation)
We still don't know how much damage the storm did and NWS teams are coming in to survey and grade the storm and if appropriate, with the Fujita scale. I'm guessing an F-3 at least to do the damage it did.

(wall cloud I was in the yard shooting just before all H*LL broke loose Friday evening.....duh!)

While our house and good trees escaped the severe storm we had here on Friday, I discovered some of the junk poplars at the back of the lot had again come down so was out yesterday with a hatchet, cutting them loose from the old trunks they sprang from. Then I'll drag them up in the yard and get them with a chainsaw. Too hard to get one in safely back there.
It's Monday, and I am exhausted.......and a whole week of work is ahead. Oy.
I will say this; while I am not surprised at the weather we are having (due to how the gulf stream had settled in late winter) I do NOT like it! And I feel sorry for everyone who was caught in the path of these nasty storm-creatures.
I will be trying to carve out some studio time when I can, so bear with me in the art department. Sometimes, life just gets completely crazy, and then Mother Nature throws in her two cents...... >:-[
Okay, hope everyone has a good week and thanks so much for your comment on Gypsy. She was a bright light in life.....
Off to face the Monday tasks!
Have a good one everyone!!!

Pax....

Oh dear Anne, I was thinking of you when I heard the path of that bad weather. Just missed us in Ky. I can see you now out there righting your little piece of heaven. I would never be able to do that and neither could HH. I hope the weather settles soon. Be safe.

Totally glad to know you and yours are fine. Regret the damage done. Force of Nature. Thy name is TORNADO!

wow anne, i had a small taste of this for about five minutes in the darkness last week. no damage here but lots of damage five miles up the road.

i'm glad you are okay. Mother Earth is not happy these days. who can blame her?

i laughed when i saw your comment to lolo. a chainsaw too? anne, you are my kind of friend. i am just the non-working supervisor, of course, but i love your spunk and guttsiness to do what you do.

thanks for your comment about clearing out my Mother's house. it helps to have the acknowledgement of someone who's been through it. the task is so formiable. so many decisions, so many memories, so many tasks.

have a great day ms. Sassy Soul Sister. i'll be thinking of you.

Hi QMM!

Oh yes, Kentucky always seems to get blasted too. My poor kin in Tennessee (Knoxville) get some wicked weather.
I had no idea when we moved out here how much physical labor would be involved, though I should have with Dad being raised on a farm....
Young, not thinking...LOL!!!
I'll wait till tomorrow to go buy my axe; too tired today!
Glad y'all are safe.

Hey Leslie,

Do they have tornados in Scotland and Ireland??? I'm thinking maybe I should be back in the land where me family came from... ;D

Hey KJ,

Yeah, living in the country requires all the implements. Otherwise you're trying to hire work out and that is iffy at best. I'd rather do it myself and know it's done right.
I've got to see if I still have some chain to wrap those trees with and pull them out with the lawntractor.....if not, it goes on the list with the axe.
My life; non-power tools! HA!

Hey Shelley,

All that picture proves is I have NO SENSE!
Quite seriously, that was such a small portion of the storm. When I was out in the car, I did not have the camera, and wished I had. It was absolutely MASSIVE....beyond what I have seen here before.

Glad you are safe. I've been worried about you. Maybe having 2 months of solid rain ain't so bad after all.

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

LOL!!! Jan, it is looking better and better to me! (maybe not the arthritis, but the REST of me!)
You really have a pretty good climate there.

Who you talkin 'bout? You talkin 'bout me??? :)

I did do some photo documentation, but I did not get in anyone's way (my dad worked as a line man and fireman...and I know better!). I also asked permission and respected the property owners decision. Before I heard on Channel 13, that the all roads are now blocked and tickets will be issued, I had decided to leave it alone...the television crews are way too intrusive.

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

LOL! I'm talking about you *documenting* the event that was in YOUR neighborhood; I'm referring to staying out of the way when seeing all the people that think they have to drive by to watch....you know the type.....and media, well, we've chewed that one to bits!!! They are entirely too intrusive, especially when someone has just lost everything. They have to go ask a stupid question.
OY.

Glad you and your hubby are safe. Tornadoes scare me more than earthquakes in California. I have lived in Minnesota and Illinois and I don't miss the tornadoes one bit.

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

Oh yeah MAry Helen,

And I am behind on everything! When you lose power frequestly....wel...you just sit in the dark and the work piles up!

Hey Freebird,

I am recalling my years in CA. and even with a few minor quakes, they were not as unsettling as this Spring.
Makes it hard to concentrate and get any work done!
I really could live withough tornadoes too.....

Oh goodness gracious, what a week you have been having. I'm so sorry to hear about your friend Gypsy. I pray she is at peace and indeed frolicking in the heavens. And the tornado! I'm relieved to know that you and your neighbors are all okay. Gosh, nature can be so darn scary sometimes.

Bella, if there is a conga line in Heaven, Gypsy is leading it and is decked to the nines! She is past this mortal coil, and making the afterlife brighter!
Thankfully we're all okay, especially stupid women who go out with cameras and a metal hip replacement in thunderstorms for photos......nuff said! ;)
