The Bargello Mystery.......

Well, now for the rest of the story, as Paul Harvey would say. Sorry for the hodge-podge on the photos; Blogger is being most obnoxious or I am clueless to what I am supposed to do to get them to behave.....and not awake enough to really care!

As stated previously I had this marvelous bargello piece, in fact, two identical pieces that I had received from Tristan. He had e-mailed me about how to make a liturgical stole and I sent him the *pattern* I work from, which is loose to say the least. I guess when you make then and tinker with them you don;t need a highly detailed pattern, plus the idea is always in my head. At any rate, he said since the bargello was done he was afraid he would screw it up (it was for an ordination gift) so would I be interested in finishing it? SURE!!! But I could not understand why he had hesitation about cutting into the pieces.

Until I got them in the mail, looked at these absolutely amazing works and though, OMG, I'm terrified to cut into them!!! No choice; we were working on a short deadline and I knew the amount of time I had each day to work out here was limited. I still cannot manage anything close to a full day so a job that should have taken me a day and a half, welllll, it took longer.
Yesterday I finally finished it up, except for trim on the edge, and in the meantime have written Tristan telling him it was basically done........come to find out, the ordination is TOMORROW, so I slapped that baby under the machine, got the trim sewn on, did what I was NOT supposed to do and drove it to town for overnight mailing. It should arrive to it's new owner this morning.

These pics are lousy as the last thing I did before bundling it up was snap a few photos, and by that time I had myself worked into a lather about getting to the Post Office so it would make the next day delivery. Remember, I live in the sticks and *Next Day* is relative, applying to larger locals. So I had to ask if it would be delivered today. Ask.
At any rate, you can get an idea of how it looked; I think the pics for the most part enlarge when clicked and like I said, these last ones are fuzzy, off kilter, and just not good.

Oh, and to explain the last photo. When originally corresponding with Tristan, I told him I had NEVER had the back of the neck line up, and always used a nice applique to cover it. (the ones I have made have had a woven design, that--the least bit off--YIKES....) Well, to get a good length I had to cut off the bottom of the piece which had beautiful reds...check the top photo. So naturally, when putting this together, I had the same problem with the back of the neck not matching, and carefully took apart the remnants of the bargello, getting a small, three strip piece, which was appliqued in place over the seam.
It visually tied it all together and gave the eye a place to rest.
And then I rested!

So.....this is what has kept me busy, in between naps and resting (or in other words, attempting to be good!) and I could have lived with that beautiful bargello just hanging on my pinning board for ever! But I got to enjoy it a short while and tomorrow, a young man will be wearing it at ordination, and all the meditation and prayer that I put in these as I do the handwork will be there with him, upon his shoulders, with Tristan's talent and color magic making him look wonderful!
We're kind of like Batman and Robin.......the Dynamic Duo!!!! (okay, Tristan is dynamic.....I'm more the speed of Alfred......)
And that's today's story kiddies! Tune in next week, same Bat Time; same Bat Channel!!!
In other words, have a wonderful weekend........

Pax.

Hi Robbie,

Yes, I said the same thing! I would love to have a photo for my collection of the stole in use....and post it here of course!!!
Tristans bargello is what *made* this stole.....I so did not want to cut that! ;)

LOL - I had TOTALLY imagined the bargello going in the other direction. LOL

It looks fabulous! I'm so glad I gave it over to you. LOL I would not have had it turn out so beautifully.

I've asked for photos - we'll see if we get them.

Thanks so much for working with me!

OMG!!! TRISTAN!
You should have told me that!!! I saw the colors going up, like Spirit rising....isn't it odd how everyone looks at a piece differently?
Hope I did not ruin it for you..... <:(

Anne - It is just so beautiful! I love the way the colors go up to the reds (I'm with you on this one!). And the piece you fitted at the collar - okay you are a genius!! Rest up now, job beautifully done. I hope you get some photos, too! xo pam

Well it turned out spectacular. A collaboration of two fine artists how nice. Reminds me when my hubby was ordained and I made his stoles. The others will be jealous. ;) Great job.

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

Hey Pam,

No genius...I just learned a long time ago how to creatively cover things that have taken on a life of their own...LOL!!!
It started when I was doing a paper pieced silk quilt, with some EXPENSIVE hand dyed silk satin (I'll have to post a pic) and eventhough I had done everything possible to stabilize it.....I had NOTHING square!!!!
Hmmmmmm....maybe tis is tomorrow's post! LOL!!!

Hey Bunny,

Yes, I hope they are ALL quite jealous!!! Oh that is SOOOOO not nice to say with the young man being ordained! But I love making these things and then seeing the recipients as they strut their stuff in them! ;)
It's a seamstress thing, I guess!

Incredible and I agreed with the way you ran the points on the bargello and Tristan should fall down at your feet. I do hope someone get a pic of the young man in his new stole. Awesome in the extreme!

This is amazing! I love the color placement - just like a cross arising. I can't imagine them going another way. There is so much beauty in its simplicity. Rest up, Lady!!

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

Thanks Leslie!
I'm not sure our dear Tristan would be saying thanks.... LOL!!! I could NOT have sewn the bargello.....the pieces were SMALL. I like BIG bargello that is easy and lazy....which is probably why I never do it anymore! The small pieces always look better. ;)

Hey Linda,

I looked at the colors and saw all the major liturgical colors and thought that the reds, for Pentacost, would be good at the neck.....
I had not seen the cross rising--amazing how we all see something different in this!
And cool too!

wow, this is luscious! You two make a great team. Too bad you couldn't hold on to it for a week or two, just to soak up that color. I hope your DH doesn't read todays post, you might get a spanking.

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

Yes....to all of it Jan! And he does occasionally check in to see what I've posted....yikes.
I'm probably busted!! (oh well...)
I'm being very good and doing a bit of studio work and then to the house to rest.
That's all.
And yes, I would have loved to have kept it for a couple of weeks...sigh.... ;)

Oh Anne you are amazing. I love you. I do not know Kristan well, but I think I need to get to know him. That project is absolutely beautiful. I had wanted to make a stole for my cousin, but had no idea how to even start. He will soon have an anniversary of ordination and we all had thought about getting one but what a thrill to be able to make it. Going over to Tristan's since I don't evern know what bargello means. I sent an e-mail about the book.

Tristan can sew faster than anyone I know! He's had his work published and shown....really does not put much of his fiber art on his blog, but on his web site....I think it's man made quilts.
Anyway, books abound on bargello patterns....I might even have one buried here (in fact I am sure I do), and really, as long as you're not working with tiny pieces, it is easy after you get over the brain drain of what you have to cut!
Thanks for the info on the book!!!

What a wonderful collaboration! I love the colors and they way it came out... just stunning! I know that this lucky young man will be starting out his journey as a priest going in the right direction, knowing that he is loved and honored. What a great gift from both of you!
These works just always blow me away.
Very well done.

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

Hi Lutra,

I found out that he received the stole at 10 this morning and the Ordination was at THREE this afternoon, not tomorrow!!!
Talk about almost not making it! LOL!!!
He was happy, I'm glad.
Things all work out!!!

Phew...talk about the nick of time! He is one lucky young man to have something so beautiful to wear. Both you and Tristan are geniuses to come up with this together. The colours are just like God created when he made flowers. Wonderful job!!

Hi MA,

Oh, I just wanted to KEEP it! Some work I have in studio long enough to say, yes, I'm ready to ship it out---I've enjoyed it.
But this went too fast!!!
It was a delight working with Tristan and he really gave me the reins once the piecing and fabric got here...how lucky can you get? :)

Hi Mary Helen,

Yes, it was a miracle I had that last burst of energy to get it DONE! We did not have a hard deadline, but the fact that it was sooooooo close, and then I found out the ordination date.....that spurred me on. I just could not let that pass!
The one thing I love doing is the infusion of prayer.....as I stitch, the intention that goes into the piece. That is probably the most enjoyable part!

The urge to snatch it up and take off for parts unknown.... ;)
But I behaved.
Sigh...

When God is in the act of creating, all things are beautiful in their finished appeal. This is truly a piece of art to be cherished for a lifetime of service for the young man receiving it. Wonderfully done both of you. I know how it feels to give over such a piece. It's like sending a child into the world. Wonderfully done both of you.

Hugs and love

Hi Christine,

Normally I have *no fear* cutting things....this was different. It was a case of "YES! FEAR!" but I just took a deep breath and hacked into it anyway.
After making sur it was all straight...on the bargello stripes!
And it was FUN!
