The Rewards of Idle Time: Or How I Finished Socks When I was Supposed To Be Resting....

WARNING!!!! Pasty, untanned leg alert! Continue at your own risk!!!

Well, the advantages of a day off are that you can sort of lounge and finish things that have not had proper time and attention, case in point, the Fern Clog Socks. I knit two at a time, toe up, so the pattern you see is upside down to what the *real* pattern looks like. And I knit the front with it, and it's not on the heel, so they are not clog socks at all. And then I ended up with ladders due to the pattern rather than the two circulars......you know, whine-whine-whine.
But as I sit here with them on, they are quite comfortable and it is a warm day, so they should be good on cooler days. And photographing socks by yourself is not easy to do without ending up in traction.
Now what to knit next....

A different view----they aren't bad. I wanted ferny-like color, but the selections were few so I have stripey ferns.
Oh well.

Other guilty pleasures of the weekend, and another disclaimer.
I am not, nor ever have been at ANY time in my life, a KISS fan. I thought they were a bunch of over-rated, over dressed, just plain OVER goofs. Plus Gene Simmons said nasty things about women who played bass (AHEM!!!!) and that torqued me off but good.
HOW EVER.
I watched a marathon of episodes of Gene Simmons Family Jewels and I hate admitting this.....I reeeealy, as an old Punk hate admitting, I feel like I am being a traitor to our code......it was one of the funniest things I have seen! His children are articulate (and he is too) and, (sigh and ick) he really seems to love the woman he lives with and has fathered his kids with. Of course, his kids think he's a dork who thinks he's cool, so that goes a long way in making the show funnier.
There.
Now I can go wash my mouth out with turpentine.
Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed watching Gene and family in situations that were most entertaining, especially when he (extremely Jewish!) was asked to be the Godfather in a Catholic Baptism. (that one's priceless) Trust me---for a belly laugh, and a few touching moments, watch this show if your have spare time.
And there's no way that hair is real, but so what? If you buy it, it's yours....right?

Movie surprise of the weekend:

UNDERDOG!
Yes, I was a fan of the cartoon and remember seeing promos for the movie thinking "no way.....".
Okay, I was wrong on that too. It's a cute, good little family film with some funny moments and the special effects are quite acceptable---not overblown but keep the feeling of the original 'toon. Watch it when you need your brain to chill.
Now it's the start of another week and I'm off to the Doc, so blogging may again get dicey and sparse but hey, I'll find something artsy or asinine to fill my page. ;-)
Now have a good one, and seriously, I have not lost my mind......really. Don't send for the padded wagon quite yet.
Maybe tomorrow.......

Pax.

LOVE those socks! Wonderful job. That same pattern would look terrific as fingerless gloves!

I can't stand Gene Simmons - I have yet to watch "Family Jewels" ... but maybe I'll give it a try. He just looks so boated and unappealing in the commercials. You woulnd't be teasing now, would you?!

Hope it's all good news from the doc!

Tristan, I swear to you, I absolutely HATED the man.....have hated KISS---NO JOKE. The show is funny because business wise, he is smart. But his wife (well, s.o.) and kids keep him very grounded and it is hilarious to see him in situations---like helping at the Parrish school with kid pick up----where he is freaking out! No acting, pure panic! Some episodes are better than others; it's hit and miss. But some are just priceless. Nothing like poor Ozzy and that bunch of nuts he lives with.
Fingerless gloves.....hmmmmm....and I have leftover yarn....enough for mitts... ;) MAYBE.

Well if you will insist on doing things your own way you will get odd results, still in all, I love your socks!

Leslie, have you known me to follow directions????? I mean, it's a lot more interesting if you just *sort of* follow them....
I love the pattern; it was quick to learn and easy to knit. And truly, I'm happy with the socks--I just wish I could have found a better colorway to knit with but that was the only thing remotely greenish.
Our LYS never has prices on any stock, so the few times I have bought there, don't know if it's a *good* price or just whatever pops into the head. I bought the yarn at JoAnns.
So your socks are better!

oh Anne, love the socks...as for resting, isn't that resting??? As for Wonder Dog, I too am a fan, but don't tell anyone else...it may not be too bad if we're put in the same paddy wagon, though!! Guess what I'm making for my 7 year old grandson for Christmas...you got it, a WD cape. He went with me to Hobby Lobby to pick out the fabric when came for the summer and spent time with me. So you and Ryan are in good company!!!

Such cute socks Anne! Gene Simmons scares me...his tounge is just so weird and creepy. LOL

Peace,

Meri

Hey Georgina...ya think they would cover the walls of the paddy wagon with fabric printed with Skellies???? And maybe put in an open bar??? That would make it much more fun! LOL!!
Yes, I guess knitting is resting...DH had the couch so I couldn't snooze in the chair, thus, socks!

Hi Meri!

Thanks on the socks....I love to knit even when they aren't quite right. (match me better!)
Gene is just an overly doting father in the show; that's what makes it so funny! I suppose it is because when he and his mother immigrated from Israel, his father was not with them.
It truly is funny.....not scary....

Love the sox!! As a fellow size 10 I will say this rather tongue-in-cheek..."they make your feet look smaller"!!
Seriously Anne, you did a beautiful job. I have yet to make sox but I was checking out some of the yarns at Michael's last Sat. I may just try my hand at them after the holidays!!
Great Post!!
Love,
Marilyn
p.s. My opinion of Gene Simmons... p u...!!

Hey Marilyn,

LOL!!! Anything to make the feet look smaller! Chinese foot binding..... ;) trying to find shoes is such a joke too.
You definitely need to try learning a basic sock pattern with a needle size of at least 4, as it will be easier to see the stitches. They are quite addictive....
I'll send you a big pic of Gene to post in your boudoir! HAHAHAHA!!!!!
(bad joke)

Audrey....LOL!!!! I think that Gene Simmons thing got everyone!
the socks are comfy and neutral--will work with my jeans etc.
We started the *routine* w/X-rays, etc.......see what we can find.
They should x-ray my head. I know it's empty!

HAHAHAHAHA! This post is so much fun! I love the socks of course because I don't knit, I admire people who do.

I have never seen the Kiss perform at all. And your day off! It seems like you had a great time! Take care Anne!

Not a KISS fan, Anne. Not. Love the socks, though! LOL! Sorry to be AWOL - got caught up in a tide of crap. Swimming to shore as we speak. :) You have a great day! xoxo Pam

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

Ces, as I knit I think of you because it makes my hands HURT and I won't stop till the socks are done......so you'd think I would learn from your posts!
It was a good day off, kind of indulging my *inner-teenager!*
