The Yellows and Reds of Summer

It has always seemed to me that summer flowers go by colors. There are swathes of one color, or color family all at once. I seem to be graced with the yellow to red family right now.

Turkscaps tall against a sky that threatens rain but does not deliver. It is quite dry and the flowers are taking the brunt of it, lasting only a short time. Normally these stems would last five days; now if I get two per flower I am lucky.

The firey red of monarda sent to me by my friend Jan is the perfect offset for this soft ivory yellow daylily. They have a vague scent, not much. The monarda, on the other hand, is pungent and delightful!

A surprise sunflower, no doubt planted by that scoundrel chipmunk that has ravaged my flowbeds. This is the only good thing the little varmint has done........ ;-)

A form of loose strife, which--as all varieties do--has taken over a whole side of the yard. It has managed to strangle the low growing evergreens I planted to try and stop erosion. I think the loose strife is more effective, as long as it doesn't take over the house next!

And a cooling combination of a plume poppy and lemon lily, the fragrant variety of daylily. They seem so appropriate together, both sturdy but delicate.
Hope you've enjoyed a bit of the beauty of summer, without heat, bugs or storms! Or weeds to pull (I cropped them out!).
Have a glorious day and enjoy the colors around you!
Pax.

How did you get a sunflower so early???

No idea! I was weeding around the remains of my sage bush and saw this stalk and I realized it was a sunflower. Whether the chipmunk planted it from bird seed or whenther a bird dropped it, I don't know, but I was pretty excited!
Luckily I got a shot before the deer came through and took a big CHOMP out of the petals.....>:(

Your monarda is way ahead of mine. I don't see even a hint of a flower yet, although the plants are quite tall and looking lush. The flowers will come. Yours are looking so gorgeous. We are supposed to get heat today.

Love the flowers - especially the greens! Don't get to see that much green in the desert!!

Everything is early here due to the amount of rain we received early in the season. I had things bloom way out of sequence and am afraid in another month, it will all be gone!
And everything is very green, except for the grass, which has toasted. We've had clouds all day, but no real rain, only mist.
