Fiendish Fiber Art~~Posted Before, Worth Repeating

I know people who have followed my work for a while have seen this piece (okay, more than once), but with new followers, being totally wound up in the commission and--well--just because I want to and can, I am reposting the photos of one of my favorite pieces.
These are pretty large files and I recommend checking out the larger size to see the details.

I used to do a lot of smaller fiber work until I started the liturgical hangings. In fact, this piece was only 14" x 15" if I recall correctly. I liked seeing what I could do with a small area--how to make it work, how to fit the most in for what I wanted without having so much that everything was a blur. Working with positive and negative space, pushing things forward and backward visually~~playing with the viewers eye. Make it interesting. Make it real.
I think, truthfully, this piece was started because I used to save all my used bass strings and then I came across this great bag of skeleton hands around Halloween. Hmmmmmm......how can I put those both together?
Only one answer....portrait piece, Jerry Only--bassist for the Misfits.
However.
What do I do next? How do I get the feel and the look and oh-my-gosh it's absolutely got to have leather and spikes and studs! (if that needs explanation, Google photos of the band)
The portrait section, shown below, is dimensional.
Yes, that was a real little jacket that I cut of leather and sewed, real zippers, real studs, real spikes, synthetic hair stitched over the portrait to get a good Devil-lock going......

So much handwork; couching bass strings around the leather studded border, fancy threads laid in carefully for dimension in the background, a stencil made to get the ghostly Fiend Face painted in just so, layers of tulle to build up sheer images of the bass (and repeating it as strictly a design element)......beads, beads, beads.......
This small thing was HEAVY. When I would hold it, I had to be careful to support the whole so that it would not flop over and have a bass string pop off. (they're pretty wicked if you get slapped or cut by one....)
This was when my art quilting started to take on a mixed media feel. I may post a few more pieces I have that I feel were leading to what I choose to do with my spare time now, providing I can find photos.
Some are gone as presents, some were purchased, some began slowly disintegrating after being out on tour in shows. It happens; you can't control how they're handled on the road compared to hanging in the studio or in storage.
Maybe at the end of the day we just need to enjoy our art in the Here-And-Now.
Every day, whatever you do.
Make it, love it, "One last caress...."

Hey Lolo,

This was SOOOOOO much fun! It's my theory of "Little But Mighty" work.
I had a ball experimenting and just useing everything I felt related to the band/portrait.
Old Punks never die......we just get odd hair-dos! LOL!!!

You little punker, you! Look what you did - it is amazing! I cannot believe you SEWED a little leather jacket. You are so talented. A little crazy, too. LOL!! Happy Wednesday! xox

Yes Pam,

I am a disintigrating Old Punk.
That partial jacket was just a bit largerthan what a Ken doll would take. Had to do flat pattern design to make it---it was not all that *hard*, much harder to hold to get through the sewing machine!
I love this period of my fiber-art.
I think I could have done punk bands for a long time---know the music so well, some I can see in my head without having to do much composition.....

This is fabulous!! Your use of so many different elements is absolutely awe-inspiring. And again, I could see this on a mug or poster - something else from Zazzle. Can't help it - my mind seems to constantly want to market - usually what others are doing! It always amazes me what we can do in fiber. Amazing work!!

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

Hey Linda,

Nah, this could not go to Zazzle due to name tm. I was able to show it and there were no problems (it hung out in the East Coast)---it's only when you go to sell that you get into trouble.
I was *amused* (being polite) when CPS or QA did a video on a local woman using metal on fiber. I sent a rather tart reply---big deal? We've been doing that for years! What's so NEW about it??? Ugh. I am growing to dislike both publication.
Okay, now I am ranting...what was I talking about? LOL!!!

I remember this piece well as I had a photo of it on my wall for ages! Interesting to know that it was a beginning step on your road to where you find yourself now. Glad you shared it again. You could probably spend the next year of blogging showing us your past works, I know you have a lot of them.

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

I do Jan! I guess I am lazy about unrolling them all, trying to pin them to the wall then doing photos. I might do a few....
Seems like lately I've been doing good to have time to puyt up a semi-coherent blog post or comment....
Maybe I have some pics stashed on the other drive....entirely possible!

What it's like inside my head??? Did you ever see Jerry Lewis in The Nutty Professor....the geeky guy hangin' in the lab?
I think that's me; and add in a little Michael DeMeng and there you go! AH-HAHAHAHAHA!!!

Hey Sophia,

Did I ever mention I almost flunked sewing in Home Ec? Hated what we were making and refused todo it the way the teacher said.
Experimenting is much more fun....lots of rules broken in this piece, which of course keeps me happy!!! :D

Omg.... that piece is incredible!! Wow!! Since I have absolutely no sewing skills I'm in awe of yours.

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

Thanks Manon!

I hate admitting this in public, but I am sure years of designing and sewing Barbie clothes had a lot of influence in doing things like the jacket.....
The rest is just flotsam rolling around in my warped little brain! :D

You were and still are the coolest lady! Who would have put this much effort into a piece!

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

Hey Robbie,

Some nut like me! All my fiber art was this detailed; which is probably why I knew it was time to move to mixed media---so hard on the hands.
Now if I could just fit into those skin-tight leather pants like I used to.......*Sigh*.... ;D

Hellooooooo Bella!

It did hang in the Whistler Museum in Lowell, Mass, for a fiber show and now belongs to the *Fiend* depicted there in. ;)
I am working on feeling better....so much mischief to get into, so little energy. Pffft!
