A Gift Of Great Meaning

First, let me provide a little background. On Mother's side of the family, whenever someone married, there were always gifts that had an acorn involved in some manner. I still have grandmother's carved bone acorn sewing kit and pictured below is great grandmother's silver acorn jewelry box. (which, as I was polishing it, I managed to break the acorn free from the base....good silversmith, here I come!)
It was heritage, lineage, tradition. It represented long life and prosperity. It was a link with long gone family members....some of whom I have no idea where they were laid to rest.

By the time Gary and I married, acorns were decidedly out of fashion, and mom could find nothing for us. I had some of her serving plates with acorns and that was fine, but we never really received *the gift* of the acorn.
Then, unexpectedly a while back (I am so behind I have been meaning to post this FOR EVER but was having Blogger troubles...) I received a large envelope in the mail from Ces and wondered what on earth it was, and how quickly I could get it ripped open. :-)
I was delighted and surprised and completely touched when I saw below:

An ACORN!!! THE acorn! Gary's and MY acorn! I just sat and stared a while, and then tried to get photos and wanted to write Ces and put the post up and do everything at once......I did get the thank you out quickly as the internet was being cranky.
At any rate, we finally got to talk and I explained to her how much this meant due to not having received the traditional gift, and that the drawing now fulfilled that spot in our life! Of course, when she sent it, she had no idea. Serendipity at work!

Even the signature is delightful! (Ces! I need to put it between two pieces of glass so I can see both sides!)
So thank you C.P. Adorio........sisterfriend, oaken nymph, creator of the Quercus Society of Blogworld, Mental Ninja and slayer of Voldemort! Who makes me laugh until I fall out of my chair and am in need of kleenex from spewing at jokes! Who better to send something like this?
Thank you.
Thank you.
From the bottom of my nutty little heart! ♥♥♥

Wonderful drawing!!! I do love it when serendipity is at work ;)

I have a friend who is an acorn/oak leaf collector. It has been great fun these past several years finding her (or painting) treasures for her collection.

She also owns many of my original raven paintings, some purchased, some gifted. I think the ravens watch over the acorns and leaves.

This is a beautiful gift Anne!

I love it---It has not made it into the house yet for the hall wall with all the art, but I have it here where I can enjoy it for the time being!
It is always amazing, Lolo, when something like this happens....the universe just puts the elements in gear and off it goes!
HAve a good one---hope it is cooler.

Awe, that Ces! How wonderful that she had no idea of the importance of her gift. She is a gift. Oh the beautious sisterfriend-hood!

It is already in the 90's and now I must go walk????? **kisskiss** Deb

Ah! Anne, I am so glad that my simple A-ThankYou-Card (ATC) meant so much. I am delighted. There's more where it came from for I am a nut factory and always enjoy doing nut jobs. In fact from now on, I will be sending Thank You Nuts instead of Thank You Notes. I shall think of a proper acorn gift for you!

My goodness! Slayer of Voldemort! Why, that is the highest compliment anyone ever gave me but I must concede, I had the help of several Good and Loving Sisterfriends and most recently a Scythe-Wielding-Hot-Babe-Chickidie. All these adventures sometimes rebound with untoward effects though, like I could not sleep last night so I spent the entire night preparing my first-ever- giveaway extravaganza!

Tsup! Tsup! Tsup! I shall draw you the acorns you so adore.

LOL!!!
Ces....Thank You Nuts..... :D
So you are doing a give-away? You will be swamped. You will be up to your armpits in nut-wanting blog followers grappling to get the prize!
Oh, I am still not awake...this is pitiful!

XXOO!!!
Anne---with NUT!

Ces Adorio said...

Oh my. My armpits are not that wide! Eeek! It's too early, why are we talking about soft tissues? Dr. Frank Netter!!! Save us!

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

Did I tell you I got a used copy of a compilation of all his illustrations? At first I thought to use for collage, but then I got looking at them and decided it was an excellent art book.
Maybe I will make COPIES to use in collage!!!
Would it be wrong to have Dr. Netter as my Pin Up of the Month???
Just askin......

No it is not! In nursing school I wanted to be like Dr. Frank netter and illustrate the human body! That is a very competitive field, I heard, plus one has to have a clinical degree like nursing or medicine!

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

You do---I had looked into it and could not believe the amount of medical education that was required to do that work. So it makes sense a Dr. would do it. In fact, some of the other illustrators have been surgeons, etc. I was amazed.....

That is so awesome. What a great tradition too.
Do you know how that one got started?
What a lovely gift, that Ces is something else.
All the sisterfriends are though!!
Lucky us.
Love and hugs Dear one.

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

Marie, I really do not know how it got started, and there is no one left to ask. I assume, with the timeframe when it was started, maybe that was a common pre-Victorian thing. It would make sense......
yes, it is a VERY NICE NUT!
(living with two other nuts!)
Sisterfriends are the best, eh?

Wow, what a great tradition! I don't have anything like that, and it makes me sad. Families need to start that early and keep it going and leave records as to the whys and wherefores.

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

Linda, I think people used to do more with tradition due to the mortality rates long ago. Then the tradition just got passed along until the real meaning was finally forgotten. If I had to guess, it would have to do with the oak having a long life, and each marriage and *acorn* was another tree being planted......
Of course, marriages now don't last like they used to either....they are more like those scrub poplars that break when the wind blows... ;D

Love the acorn...beautiful illustration. How interesting that your family began this tradition!!

I'm kind of out of the loop right now...why you haven't heard much from me, I shall return. Taking a side trip to Phoenix next month...have already taken one to Hell this past summer, but here I go again...picked one of the hottest (temperature wise) places to visit. Just going for a weekend to visit with my sis and niece...need the getaway. Later on, Vern and I will be going to Albuquerque for a short trip...need to get out of here...going crazy!!

Love ya,
G
