A Country Evening....

Yes, even out in the country, we are treated to fireworks. For all the years we have lived here, we still have not figured out what small town, campground or individual puts them on.
And it is not just the man-made fireworks that make the viewing special; the yard was ripe with fireflies, blinking on and off. Sufficient to say that even without the explosive type, the gentle lights glowing in the humid warm air was a display in and of itself.
It is a private celebration. When the weather is dense enough, the scent of sulphur will drift foe miles and the concussion of the explosions may be felt. It is as though the display is strictly for you. It is most special.
The slightly sad item from the evening is that normally there are many familes in the miles around us that have their own small fireworks displays, but alas, an economy that has failed here has brought an end to that small summer's night pleasure. I noticed that more than anything.....how quickly it all ended.
When we first moved here, all about would be displays. It would begin to the north, then head south, then several places in the western sky would be alight with the magic fires.
I am of course, being a bit selfish with this memory. I know exactly what it is connected to. One does not buy fireworks when there are no jobs, when gas has skyrocketed and when food cost are as high as the explosions in the night air.
And I held that close as I watched the last of the exquisite fairy-dance creations.
But my little fireflies dance each night, quietly, adrift on the humidty-haze.
Summer is here in Indiana.
And I miss the more prosperous ones.

Pax....

I noticed the same thing here, Anne. There were still fireworks, but not as many as I remember from summers past. We had plenty of sparklers and roman candles to amuse us, and fireflies aplenty. It was a lovely night, and now we have a heat wave coming. Time to get myself up to my little space and make things! :) xox! Pam

Pam, the heat wave is already here---up in the 90's today and this morning it is hot and humid already.
The gods of blogdom allowed me to post this a.m. after much ado....of course, the 11 comments waiting to be published will go nowhere...
*sigh*
Have a productive day!

The economy is bad so people are not burning their money on fireworks.

By the way, I have a headache. I have peach ice cream hangover.

Today is my last day of freedom. I report to jail tomorrow for a 60-day sentence.

So I am listening to Handel, Orff, Bach, Brahms, Grieg, Vivaldi, Scarlatti, Saint-Saens... and you know what? I am drinking coffee in bed and my laptop is on a pad with a built-in fan on top of my lap.

Soon I will get up and scoop myself some peach ice cream on a Sunflower Fiesta bowl or a Bauer French Blue sherbet cup.

You still have not answered my question. What are you wearing today?

Today, I am wearing camouflage pants and a t-shirt and I promised myself I will continue painting the picture I started last week. My easel beckons but I am too lazy.

Do you feel like talking filthy to me again?

Tsup! Tsup!

Oh I almost forgot.

I think I love you. Maybe I do, Yes I do, I think I do. I am sure. Do you like to pick fresh peaches with me? Meet me at the orchard in ... oh dang, I forgot the name of the town. It starts with the letter G... It is in North Carolina, oh wait, I think South Carolina. Do you know that there is an oak tree that is almost 1,500 years old in Johns Island, South Carolina. Audrey has seen it.

You should post that scythe-wielding-chaps-wearing-blonde-hottie again.

It is the Angel Tree you're speaking of! We should go and pick up NUTS! And acorns too.....HAHAHAHAHA!!!!! :D
That's as filthy as I can get this morning---I am not awake! You made me laugh too hard yesterday and I think I ruptured a blood vessle!
I will have to think up something awful to say...yes...later!
And of course you love me!
How could you not???
I am a blonde goddess!!!
And I am HUMBLE.

Actually had a great time here...sorry for yesterday's rant...the synapses are causing me to see reality all too realistically!! LOL No fire flies here...guess to hot for them, but we had our own little firework display in our backyard, after we put ol' Xena and Buck inside (my brother's very old Labs), but Cosmo (little bro's lab and still a baby) enjoyed all the commotion and added some comedy to the mix.

Food was great as was seeing family. The s-i-l danced but no one paid any attention....actually felt horrible for her. Thought she would just do her one dance since no one was watching, but honoured us with #2...guess she just didn't get it.

Going to spend a quiet Monday and will go over to Miss Daisy's and visit with little bro and fam.

Love ya,
G

Hey Georgina,

It's HOT--everyone rants. I'm still ranting at the blogs I can't see and the comments I can't post, so we are even.
Oh, the latest is not being able to follow new ones....ACK!

Mucho love,

No idea Georgina.
Some blogs I can't get into; some throw me out to a blank page, some can't follow, some I can't leave comments and then here, sometimes I can't even post photos or do a post--OR--it will post one comment and not another.
I am not a happy camper.
Got so mocuh to do I need to be off here anyway this week.....it's all piled up.

Anne, here in San Francisco, we were "treated" to a three hour "display" of loud, booming fireworks. They MAY have been lovely - but no one could see them as the fog rolled in , thick as cream, around 4:00 p.m. My own neighbourhood is pretty quiet (as a rule) regarding fireworks....but, this year, someone (or some-two) were setting off individual "booms" for hours on end.... scaring all the animals and we humans....

I wish I could send you some of our Summer Fog....we will be in the 50's all week....and then some...

Send me some fireflies and some 80's please!

Hugs,

♥ Robin ♥

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

Ah, fond memories of the fog horns in San Fran in the mornings....when you couldn't see your hand in front of your face! I remember THOSE well Robin!
We did not have too many people setting of firecrackers or cherry bombs (thankfully) but during the day there were a few booms that made me wonder if someone had an M-80 and had shot my house! LOL!!!
New neighbors, and they are *quiet*..... :)

Goodness, what wild times I have missed here in comment land... Well, blond goddess, I am glad you are having a good day! We missed the fireworks, but then we usually do in order to be with Winslow, who tends to be a Nervous Nellie when the fireworks go off. Glad you are doing well!! Love, Silke

that's an amazing shot of the fireworks, Anne! and aren't fireflies great? I love 'em. And for some reason, they like mating on one particular plant in our garden... I call it their nooky plant ;D

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

Ah Silke,

The blonde Goddess has been reduced to a stinking, filthy mess from being out subduing the acre.....beating it into submission a la the John Deere. (and no, I did not lift it this time....LOL!!!)
I think I need a flea dip..... :[

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

Oh Di--that is too funny! I wonder what plant it is??? I know monarchs catepillars will only feed on the milkweed family, box elder bugs inhabit something that is similar looking to queen annes lace...I always find it interesting how a species zeroes in on a particular plant!
There must be some nooky plant around here.....because I have a LOT of fire-flies! :D

What a beautiful picture Anne. We can't really see fireworks from our house and I have to say I'm a not a fan of them in the neighborhood (drove my dog practically insane as well as my daughter when she was little). Of course now she tells us how deprived a childhood she has had that we do not have fireworks in our yard. But I do love the big displays and miss seeing them from my roof in Indiana way back when. We'll have to make it up to Heidi next year.

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

I'm with you Christine---I like fireworks when they are put on by people who know what they are doing! (like a fire dept!)
The people who lived next to us previously had a nasty boy who ALWAYS had firecrackers and we found he had set off a bunch in our garage while we worked out in the far back of the lot.
I was never so glad to see people move....I would have helped lift the crap for them! ;D

You are very blessed to have both fireworks AND fireflies. I remember fireflies from growing up in the midwest, but here on the west coast there aren't any.

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

As I have learned today Terra, they are not everywhere! When we returned to Indiana, I was in third grade, so for me, they've just *always* been there, thus assuming everyone had the little wonders!
(and everyone should have them...)

I'll take fireflies over fireworks any time (altho' I do admit that fireworks ARE pretty if they're done correctly). Like you, we have some idiot kids in the neighbourhood that pay no never mind to the fact that things are hot and dry right now and that houses CAN catch on fire. Argh!!

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

That was the problem with the previous neighbors and their hillbilly clan. They would set the things off, shoot them in our direction (once landing on the ROOF) all the while they were drunk as skunks.
I remember one drought when I sat in the backyard with the hose ready for the morons to send something over. And none of them every got blown up either...... >:[
