Breaking Rules

I have found, with both photography and creativity in general, it is not in following the rules, but knowing what they are and breaking them.

1. One does not shoot photos into the sun.

2. Lens-flare is bad.

3. There are rules to proper composition.

4. Photographing the perfect flower is preferable to photographing one less than perfect.

5. Realistic color is best.

And every one of those would have yielded a lesser picture. In fact, I was shooting in an atmosphere so humid, I had to keep wiping the haze off the lens with my shirt.
I broke every rule I could think of on this shot.
And I love it! Because it captures the true feel of the moment. I think we are in an age of creativity without bounds; only our own, self imposed rules that perhaps should not be there.

Now go find something creative that you have been taught is *always right* and break a few rules.
You have my permission!

Pax....

7/21   P.S. My computer puked on me this morning....I was able to post comments, but Google and Blogger tag-teamed me and I was at a loss for what happened. I apologize for a *group* reply. Everything froze, things in my Windows program changed, I could not exit anything, could not access Blogger.....you name it. Had to go back in and restart from scratch, and luckily my blog is still here!
I had moments of doubt....thanks for bearing with me. Grazie!

I'm a bit of a non-conformist myself! I was actually voted class rebel in the ninth grade ;)
I have always gone to the beat of my own drummer and I make no apologies as long as it doesn't hurt anyone.

That said...I love this shot too!!

Rules schmules!

Woweee zoweeee (that is my highest form of flattery - lol)!! I love this pic. The moisture in this photo is palatable. You're good. :)
I am loving that lolo was voted class rebel in the 9th grade! lol! That is the best. xox! Pam

Cool shot -- really captures the whole dripping hot summer thing.

Yay Lolo!!!!

Yes, my nonconforming ways seem to deal with hair, clothing and art and music. I am not sure there is anything else in life worth the effort! LOL!!!
You go class rebel!

Dearest Pam,

I thank you for the award of highest flattery.
I accept.
(smirk!)
With humility!
(giggle!)
Because I have a lot!
(snarf!)
As I have never used any!!!! LOL!!!
yes, class rebel...that's pretty cool.... ;)

Hey KAren,

I had not even looked at it that way, but YES! It does capture this summer in one single shot....
other than me running to the cellar repeatedly! LOL!!!

Gorgeous, Anne! Actually, it make me linger and look at it in detail, which often a "perfect" flower picture doesn't as everything is so obvious. This looks mysterious and somehow mystical. Happy Tuesday! Love, Silke

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

That was what I liked Silke...when expanded to a larger size...there is so much to look at.
It is one I would consider printing...and I seldom do that!

I love rules! Rules rule! I am the Rules Queen. I write rules. Really, I do write rules. I am a professional rule writer and they pay me good money to write rules. I am a clinical analyst, but my rules save lives, for example, some doctor will prescribe Potassium for a patient with a K level of 5.2 and my rule will say "Hey Dr. Dude! Watch it? You wanna make this patient be in rigor mortis in a couple of hours? Go ahead!" Well, not really in those words but I do alert them for adverse drug events, patient safety and proper dosing. That is the logical person in me. So I naturally love rules - but art is not logical. The only rule in art is "CREATE!" Ooops, that's a verb...about verb, here's one "Go to work!" Ooops that a sentence, okay just - WORK!

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

My Dear Ces...

YOUR RULES should never be broken!!! :D
ALL OF THEM.......
And yes, creativity needs a softer grip on people. So that they can create.
Doing some research..... :)
I don't get paing to do that! LOL!!!

What did I just write????
"I don't get paid to do that!"
That is what it should have said.
I give up.
No more typing today......

It is a good thing you put the word "creative" in front of your sentence telling us to go break some rules. You might have felt a little guilty when we all commented on the "bad" things we did today because "Anne told us to". HAhahahah
This photo is sultry, Anne. I can feel the heat and humidity by looking at it. There is something almost sexual about it. A great shot!!

Anne! LOL! I meant "palpable", although I suppose you could eat it - lol!! Not enough coffee, too little sleep = brain fog. xox!

From one "rule-breaker" to another.... a magical photo! Well done!

Hugs,

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

hey Audrey,

I give you permission to break any rule you want! LOL!!! :D
Of course, if you are arrested, saying I let you do it is not going to cut it.
Just sayin'.....
Yes, the pic has an odd appeal even to me--there are so many things going on. I would like to enlarge and then just crop sections and see how it stands that way---as abstract.

**gasps** Fantastical!!! Oh how I LoVe ♥♥♥ And I love my little rule breaker and the rule maker. I am breaking rules on my blogs today too. Sad to end the beer truck party, although I think I will host a cantina party and have all of you send me photos, original or lifted, of what you will bring to the party... **kisskiss** Deb

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

I guess that is why I don't mind being "self taught"
I don't know what the rules are,so I have no limits or boundaries.

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

Absolutely, and me too!
Sometimes I think the less you know, the MORE you know....
Not having to unlearn a bunch of things and then find your own voice.
Works for me! :)

I like the "no rules" way of life. At least to a certain extent. Rules are good when it comes to traffic. But photography? It is good to know the rules so one can feel free to break them. Artists are good at that.

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

I agree Jan! There are places for rule, but in the area of creativity, a no-rules approach lets you learn what works and what doesn't and also lets happy accidents come along.
I think there is merit in stepping outside the box and seeing what is possible! :)

I think, if the so-called 'rules' were never broken, we wouldn't have a fraction of the great art we see. Excellent breakage Anne!
ooh - word verification is 'living' (how apropos).

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

Hi M.A.

I agree...when you look at all the great art movements, they started by someone fearlessly breaking rules.
And in societies much stricter than ours.
Kudos to them!
We are all in good company!

Your photo is magnificent and awe-inspiring! My kind of energy and vibe..beautiful! I have rule breaker since birth..I didnt know what rules were..yet it kept being brought to my attention..! I feel creatively..those who create from the realm of the mind..express in a linear way..have boundaries and boxes and rules to follow...and those who create from the heart and spirit are boundless, open and free ..and are able to transcend all the boxes..and it is a natural state of awareness to play in! Your post further ingites in me..that I also love being a self-taught artist..is there any other way to be?
Wonderful post!
