Fairyland Of Frost

Waking to an incredibly dense fog, I found once it lifted, a landscape transformed into pure crystaline beauty, with the simplest of forms glimmering in a coating of icy diamond crusting.
The common was uncommon, the trees hung heavily with lacy trim, the air shimmered in the intense Winter sun. The corners, fencerows and roads I am familiar with were from another landscape.........
I stood, breathing in the searing cold, no longer middle aged and aching and chilled to the bone but a child again in Italy, in the mountains, where everything had the whisper of fairies and sprites and an older world beyond this one.
In Germany, when St. Nicholas walked the gas-lit darkened streets in the quiet of snow......the same feel. In the hush, I listened for footsteps.
The trees, like great mounds of heaven cloud descended and glowing ethereally, what one would find in the Alps.
Was this my Indiana? Was this the muddied, Winter-ravaged vista I had seen the day before?
Too beautiful for words, I shook off the biting cold and hurried back inside.
With warmed bones and wrapped in proper clothing, I watched as the hoar-frost fell delicately and burst in the air; a million bits of glitter to briefly shine and disappear.
And then, the momentary vision,  gone..........
I blink.
A deep sigh.
On with the day.

Pax.

Oh Marilyn!!!! What a name---yeah, that's cool! Laughter solves or helps just about anything!
We have frost again this morning, but not as pronounced as yesterday, and I am not going out in 2 degrees in my pajamas to comtemplate life and the world.
I'll stare from the studio door this time! ;)
Glad you're doing well--makes me feel better too!

Anne, you have to write a 'book'...I felt like I just read the intro to a good story! Love the new header on your blog..keep meaning to tell you that! On with the day! Just to make you feel better...it rained (again) all day yesterday and it's over cast and 38 (@ 9:00 a.m.) here in Florida!

Thanks Robbie!!!
I am so sorry this cold has dipped to Florida; I know how much of the state depends on warm weather for crop income, plus, those who just want to GET AWAY from the winter-not-so-wonderland!!!!
Stay warm!!!!

Hi Bunny,

It truly has been an odd winter; this is usually our late Decemebr/early January weather, so I think my body's internal *Spring clock* is totally confused.
Well, I am mostly totally confused! LOL!!!

Hi Gypsy!

It was absolutely incredible! I wanted to stop along my drive to get pics but had some dolt tailing me, and there were sections of road not cleared; did not want an accident.
The Canadian Opening Ceremonies were without a doubt the most beautiful, most artistic and touching and sweeping I have ever seen. Most ceremonies are pushed out of my memory soon.....this one, it will stay.
I thought they handled the tragic loss with great dignity; how sad to have that happen before the games even opened, or at any time.

Anne - that was just lovely. So beautifully written. :) I had a moment like that yesterday. I was done with my snow blowing for the day (LOL!) and Sophie and Lucas were playing in the backyard. It was sunset, and the trees were backlit with orange and gold. I couldn't get my camera, because I am not terribly quick in snow with boots, so I just stood there and like you, was transported to another time and place. Now be good and stay inside and don't hurt yourself!! xoxox Pam

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

Pam, aren't those moments just priceless??? You can hold it in your head and heart, and even words and a picture are not the same.
For all the ICK of Winter, it's sort of like we get these little rewards for enduring it!
I'm in for the day; doing the geek-thing on DH's computer and lord help me that I do it right! LOL!!!
Stay warm!!!

Anne, you need to write a book. I am always transported by your writing, and this was exceptionally so!

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

I tell you Linda, the more I write on here, and the more y'all say that.....you're giving me ideas. But ont he other hand, there is that thing about finding a publisher, yadda yadda.
It would have to be photos and words, because I only get lucky with words now and then, and seem to NEED the pic and experience to do the post!
And it took three edits to get this where I wanted it...... :)
Have a good one!

Beautiful words definitely worthy of publishing. From reading the comments, you transported many of us to a fairyland of stillness and joy. Thank you for that.
Keep warm, my friend. Did you hear on the news that this is the first time in history 49 states had snow in one winter? This global warming is terrible, isn't it?

Thank you for this post and the fabulous imagery. Love and hugs, stay warm!

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

Ah Audrey, this is the flip side of global warming. When onepart goes out of whack, it affects the other too. So areas that do'nt usually get cold are frozen and areas (like the arctic) are losing their ice pack due to warmer temps. It is one of those odd complex things....I think like being SICK! LOL!!!
It was lovely this a.m. too, but my knees and fingers retorted loudly "NO!" when considering another photo venture.....old sucks! HAHAHA!!!!

what a wonderful picture of your winter wonderland. Girl I know that we are all tried of the snow. All of us have gotten some he he he he! Yes we keep in mind that there are many others who have not come home yet and those that will never really come home, but God is faithful and merciful. It's good to see Nick home with Stephanie. Oh the very sad stories that we have heard from others. It's painful. I keep them in my prayers as well. Sending you the best Valentine's Day wishes ever.

Hey Vanessa,

I prefer the term *gotten some* not used in reference to SNOW! HAHAHAHA!!!!!
Just so happy your loved ones are together.....what a lovely present for y'all!♥♥♥
I wouldn't mind the beautiful frost if I could get out and walk like I did last year for photos.....grump, grump!

Your writing is always superb but you have really outdone yourself with this one. Beautifully written and a gorgeous photo too. I have seen that hoar frost a few times here, it is very special and memorable.

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

Thanks Jan!
It just never lasts long enough. Some times I have been out and when trying to touch it, realize it is just ether----it disappears like a soapbubble the moment your finger come in contact with it.
I remember mom telling over and over about the one mountain in Italy, where my wood nativity came from---the village was so high that it constantly had the hoar frost all winter, and the people had no way to go to and from town, thus the industry of hand carved nativities.
Seems appropriate, yes? :)

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

Hey Deb,

Thanks so much! I wish I had time to do all the things I want; it seems, though, as I get older, the days grow shorter, or I grow SLOWER, which is indeed a NOT NICE thought!!!!

What a lovely and poetic vision - of a landscape that I wish would be gone! I don't usually mind winter, but it's REALLY getting to me this year!

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

I like the FROST Tristan---I could do without the ICE!! LOL!!
I think we have had more than our share...., eh? ;)

Is there anything quite as beautiful as the untouched landscape of mother nature after a first hard snow fall? Indiana gets so many "almost snowed" days that when we truly take on snow, it's quite breathtaking... well unless you have 4 dogs who pee on it! :) T

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

LOL!!!! OH my gosh---how funny!!
I am so anal, I love to try and get in the yard BEFORE any wild critters, so that I can get pics before the snow surface is disturbed......
I am nuts....
You know that! ;)

I love photos and moments like that. At least it transforms you for a little while. Like when it snowed the 6-8 inches here. Even though the interstate is not too far away it was actually very peaceful and quiet for a little while, that is until the dump truck plowed through!

Anne Huskey-Lockard said...

Ulrike, I know just what you mean. That quiet connected with snow and fog.
And then our rickety plows go down the road...well, thank you for removing the peace! HA!
I do often wonder what it was like in the horse and sleigh era....how quiet....
